Abstract
To investigate how working memory maintenance mechanisms change as a function of task goals, participants either had to reproduce, or identify, an oriented bar from memory. Although the memorandum was identical for both tasks, they invoked dissociable memory traces, as reflected in induced alpha-band power and raw EEG signals. We propose that these signals reflect oscillatory and elevated firing mechanisms that respectively support location-based and object-based maintenance.
