These circuits have unique upstream and downstream connectivity, and are differentially active during exploration of a potentially threatening environment. Artificial activation of the superficial circuit promotes exploration via preferential recruitment of PFC inhibition, while activation of the deep circuit promotes avoidance via direct excitation.
