In early visual cortex this creates areas with mirror or non-mirror representations of the visual field, an arrangement which is theorized to minimize wiring cost. We demonstrate that a more complex map consisting of both types of representation exists in an extrastriate area, and show how this can emerge from a mechanism that maintains topographic continuity.
