2021, Methods in EnzymologyCitation Excerpt :Fast changes in Vm, such as action potentials on the millisecond timescale, drive the specialized physiology of neurons and cardiomyocytes. Changes over longer timescales, from seconds to minutes to hours, may also be important in cells traditionally considered not to be electrically excitable, and have been implicated in processes such as mitosis (Cone & Cone, 1976), cell cycle progression (Huang and Jan 2014), differentiation (Chen et al. 2019; Tsuchiya & Okada, 1982), and development (Levin, 2014). The “gold standard” method for measuring membrane potential is patch-clamp electrophysiology.
