Fates of identified pioneer cells in the developing antennal nervous system of the grasshopper Schistocerca gregaria
2016, Arthropod Structure and DevelopmentCitation Excerpt :The grasshopper antenna is such an appendage, comprising scape, pedicel and flagellum (Chapman, 1982). Externally, the flagellum is characterized by segments called meristal annuli (Chapman, 2002), whose borders are delimited early in embryogenesis by epithelial bands of Annulin (Bastiani et al., 1992), Lazarillo (Boyan and Williams, 2004), and Lachesin (Ehrhardt et al., 2015a) labeling. The early embryonic antenna comprises four such annuli termed A1, A2, A3, A4 starting from the apex.
Evidence that the primary brain commissure is pioneered by neurons with a peripheral-like ontogeny in the grasshopper Schistocerca gregaria
2008, Arthropod Structure and DevelopmentCitation Excerpt :Controls for the specificity of all the antibodies employed involved: (a) application of the relevant secondary antibody in the absence of the primary antibody (in no case was a staining pattern observed); and (b) comparison of our experimental results with the originally published data (in all cases an identical staining pattern to that first description was observed). Annulin is a ca. 100 kD membrane-associated protein whose expression in the nervous system is in neuroepithelial sheath cells around mitotic neuroblasts, precursors and their progeny (Bastiani et al., 1992). The monoclonal antibody (Mab 7F11) against Annulin was diluted 1:1 in preincubation medium and embryo incubation was for 24 h at 4 °C.
Embryonic development of a peripheral nervous system: Nerve tract associated cells and pioneer neurons in the antenna of the grasshopper Schistocerca gregaria
2007, Arthropod Structure and DevelopmentCitation Excerpt :Associated with the axonal scaffold established by the pioneers are the axons of sensory cells differentiating in the epithelium (Fig. 1E), and an array of cells called nerve tract associated (NTA) cells which have a different ontogeny. These NTA cells do not express the neuron-specific antigen HRP (Fig. 1D,E; Jan and Jan, 1982), nor such glia-associated antigens as repo (Fig. 4; Halter et al., 1995) and Annulin (Bastiani et al., 1992; Boyan et al., 1995). The NTA cells are first observed prior to the pioneers – at about 30% of embryogenesis.
The tibial-1 pioneer pathway: An in vivo model for neuronal outgrowth and guidance
2003, Methods in Cell BiologyCitation Excerpt :Although the functions of laminin and semaphorins have been partly elucidated, the roles of other molecules expressed in the limb bud remain to be determined. Annulin, a transglutaminase, is restricted to epithelial bands in the developing limb bud (Singer et al., 1992; Bastiani et al., 1992; Singer et al., 1995). G-innexin-1, a connexin gap junction protein, is expressed at the trochanter–coxa segment boundary (Ganfornina et al., 1999).
