This study also witnessed severe degradation and necrosis of the ovary coupled with poor feeding activity, presumably due to the lack of resources. Parasitic castration is a phenomenon where the parasite blocks or reduces the host reproductive output [71–75]. Parasitic castration and gonadal regression due to parasites are well documented among invertebrates, especially in molluscs and crustaceans [32–34].

Additionally, weight reduction in the studied host crabs may have been caused by decreasing host activity levels resulting from parasite infestation which lowered their feeding rates, as found in a previous study on rhizocephalan infection in the flat back mud crab Eurypanopeus depressus (Smith, 1869) [9]. In the present study, both parasites affected host condition only moderately, because deleterious effects on host crabs would reduce parasite growth and reproduction [21,23,24]. The impact of the parasitic effect on host weight did not significantly differ between parasites, which may indicate that there is a trade-off between impacts on hosts and the survival of the two parasite species (i.e., more negative impacts on hosts could adversely effect survival of the parasite).

However, the ability of rhizocephalans to manipulate their decapod hosts is quite exceptional; an impressive example is the feminization of male crabs. The abdomen of an infested male widens and becomes similar to that of a healthy female (Reinhard, 1956; Kristensen et al., 2012). Additionally, the chelae decrease in size, and the crab becomes less aggressive (Innocenti et al., 2003).

      2015, Advances in Parasitology
      Citation Excerpt :

Of note is the recent discovery of a swelling in the fixed finger of a propodus of the Holo-Pleistocene ghost shrimp Glypturus panamacanalensis, but this swelling was probably not caused by a parasitic isopod (Klompmaker et al., 2015). Modification of secondary sex characters by epicaridean isopods, such as feminization of the male chelae in shrimps (e.g. Tucker, 1930; Beck, 1980) and widening of the abdomen in male crabs (Reinhard, 1956), has been recorded in modern decapods, but this would be difficult to detect in fossils unless specimens are exquisitely preserved. Quantitative data on infestation by isopods are sparse, although a few data exist on prevalence rates by locality and/or by host taxon (Bachmayer, 1955; Houša, 1963; Radwański, 1972; Boucot, 1990; Wienberg Rasmussen et al., 2008; Klompmaker et al., 2014).
