We adopted vectors pACYC184 (Rose, 1988), pRK404 (Ditta et al., 1985), and pUC18 (pUC19) (Takara Bio, Ohtsu, Japan) and other Duet-1 vectors (Merck, MO, USA) as the backbones for the carotenoid plasmids (Fig. 1A–D). Carotenoid biosynthesis genes carried by these vectors are listed in Tables 1 and 2.
