Publisher Summary

The molecular and developmental analyses of the Antennapedia complex have shown that it differs from the Bithorax complex in two striking ways. First, interposed among the homeotic loci of the ANT-C is a group of genes that, while important in the ontogenic process, are not homeotic in character. The second and perhaps more interesting difference lie in the spatial patterns of expression of the homeotic genes of the ANT-C that is necessary in the head. The three functional units of the BX-C are expressed in overlapping domains in the trunk of the animal. The entirety of the ANT-C has been cloned, and antisera has been raised to the protein products of all of the genes for which mutations exist. With these reagents in hand and with the ease of manipulation of the genome available in Drosophila, many questions about the roles of these genes in development can be answered.
