Duffy antigen is expressed during erythropoiesis in Duffy-negative individuals
2023, Cell Host and MicrobeCryptic erythrocytic infections in Plasmodium vivax, another challenge to its elimination
2022, Parasitology InternationalCitation Excerpt :The presence of P. vivax in the bone marrow was first noticed in the late 19th century [62]. This observation was confirmed after examinations of sternal bone marrow aspirates as an accessory to examinations of peripheral blood in malaria, including P. vivax samples [67]. In contrast, absence of parasites in the bone marrow of anemic children with dyserythropoiesis and ineffective erythropoiesis was later observed [68], thus casting doubts on the original observations of P. vivax parasites in the human BM.
Plasmodium vivax in Hematopoietic Niches: Hidden and Dangerous
2020, Trends in ParasitologyCitation Excerpt :While Plasmodium spp. can also invade orthochromatic erythroblasts, there is no evidence for a significant parasite fraction in these cells [12,40,41]. Multiple case reports have detected P. vivax at higher parasite biomass in the BM compared to blood, or exclusively in the BM [12,25,42–45]. P. vivax infections after BM transplantation have also been reported [27,46–48], suggesting that BM may represent a pivotal tissue reservoir in P. vivax infection.
Plasmodium vivax: Restricted tropism and rapid remodeling of CD71-positive reticulocytes
2015, BloodCitation Excerpt :They may, however, be discoverable in the marrow when absent from the blood”.38 Indeed, in subsequent studies, bone marrow parasitemias were on average double those of the peripheral blood,39 and many patients with negative blood smears were only found to be infected by P vivax by sternal puncture.40-43 These observations suggest that the bone marrow is a site of P vivax accumulation, but they do not shed any light on whether these parasites were collecting in the primary extravascular sinusoids, in the lumen of the sinusoidal capillaries, or in both.
