Abstract
The weather is often damp during seed development and harvesting in Hokkaido, in the north of Japan. In order to develop white-grained wheat cultivars tolerant top re-harvest sprouting, seed dormancy was investigated under field and greenhouse conditions using red- and white-grained varieties as well as recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross betweenKitakei1354 (red dormant) and AUS1408(white dormant). Under dry conditions, there was no significant difference between red and white wheat in regard to seed dormancy, and a high correlation coefficient was detected between dormancy and embryo sensitivity to abcsisic acid (ABA). Under wet and humid conditions, a red seed coat would appear to be essential for the maintenance of a suitable level of seed dormancy but under less challenging dryer conditions white wheat dormancy was found to be adequate.
