Enterovirus 71 is the etiologic agent for hand, foot and mouth disease. Infection of rhesus monkeys by different inoculation routes results in distinct targeting rates and injury to the central nervous system. Only intravenous and respiratory inoculations result in a direct infection of the central nervous system, accompanied by inflammation of lung tissue.
